Progress so far

Under the Administration of Father Laurie Blake, Father Tony Percy and our current Parish Priest, Father Dermid McDermott we have achieved the following:

  • Stabilising of the western wall.
  • Strengthening of roof trusses.
  • Restoration and repair to the stonework on the western wall.
  • Replacement of sandstone components on the western wall.
  • Carving and placement of new crosses and finials.
  • Repair, strengthening and cleaning of stained glass windows on the western wall.
  • Stainless bronze mesh protection over the stained glass windows.
  • Replacement of statues of St. Peter and St. Paul
  • Repair and Restoration to brass items including the tabernacle doors, candlesticks, lecterns, altar rails, and chalices belonging to Bishop Lanigan and Bishop Gallagher.
  • Cleaning out of the ceiling space (9 tons of dust!).
  • Restoration and repair to stonework in the northern transept.
  • Replacement of sandstone components on the northern transept.
  • Installation of a mosaic to honour Caroline Chisholm on the covered in window on the northern transept.
  • Carving and placement of new crosses and finials.
  • Glass entrance on the northern transept including the installation of a stained glass window from the former Reidsdale Catholic Church, now deconsecrated.
  • The removal of the back sacristies to make way for future renovation to the western entrance.
  • The completion of the excavation under the sanctuary. There are a few further minor details to be completed before the crypt is open for tours.
  • The removal of the Bishop Barry marble altar from the St. Patrick’s Cemetery chapel and installation in the Cathedral.
  • The construction and installation of a new marble ambo to match the Bishop Barry Altar.
  • The removal of the wooden pulpit, new sanctuary chairs constructed from timbers removed from the back sacristies and carpet squares in the sanctuary.
